SQL SERVER TIPS FROM THE FIELD – 3 THINGS IT LEADERS MUST KNOW ABOUT SQL SERVER
Microsoft SQL Server is gaining more and more market share. IT Leaders find SQL Server is a great place to store your company’s most valuable data so it can be readily accessed when needed. This raises the question: How do I protect my precious data, as well as speed up access to it so people don’t complain? In this session, we’ll learn new features in Microsoft SQL Server 2016, the best methods of backing up/restoring the database, methods for cloning the data real-time and distributing access across other VM’s (AlwaysOn) and how to determine why SQL Server is hogging up all of the CPU and how to turbo-boost performance without upgrading hardware! This will be a lot to cover in a short time, including multiple demos, so prepare to take lots of notes.

Automating Existing Systems
Welcome to the team! You were hired to help us automate our existing systems. Don’t worry, they’re all working reasonable well, each server has a meaningful name so you’ll know what it does, and our set-up procedures have been thoroughly documented in the wiki.

Perhaps you have walked into a similar situation or face one back at work today. Where do you start?! How do you know when you’re done?

Few of us are starting from scratch. Our systems are already in production, delivering business and customer value. But perhaps these systems were built and are being managed by hand. This talk will provide practical advice for an approach to automating these systems.

Start by figuring out what you have, decide where to start, and get to work. Oh, but don’t bring down production! The last person who did that is no longer on the team.

What does it mean to be Cloud Native? - From Containers to Functions
What does it mean to be cloud native? Who’s driving these definitions? Let’s tour the cloud native ecosystem’s tooling, starting with an understanding of why containers have taken our infrastructure by storm and what function container orchestrators do and do not provide. What place do service meshes and serverless in this new landscape?

Who’s running these new tools? We’ll reflect on the shift from enterprise-architected software to continuously-delivered software and the cultural and organizational changes that accompany change in software delivery - from sysadmin to SREs.
